Panniculectomy
A panniculectomy is a medically necessary procedure designed to remove the hanging “apron” of skin and fatty tissue from the lower abdomen only. The upper abdomen is not treated. Generally, skin halfway between the belly button and the bottom of the skin fold is removed. This is performed for functional reasons, such as rashes, infections, hygiene problems, and back or posture issues. This is the portion that insurance may cover when medical criteria are met.

The Hybrid Approach Most Patients Choose
Many patients use insurance to cover the medically necessary panniculectomy, and self pay for the cosmetic components of a tummy tuck — which allows removal of about twice as much skin and fat including skin from the entire abdomen (upper and lower). Underlying abdominal muscles are tightened, liposculpting & waist contouring is added if needed, and the belly button is repositioned — for a more complete and natural result.
This approach allows you to:
