Vishal was born in New Delhi, India on January 2, 1970. His mother was a school teacher and his father worked for an airline company. Along with his brother, who is three years older, he was raised in a 400 sq ft. apartment. When he was 9 years old, his parents decided to move to America searching for a brighter future for their children. They moved to Queens, New York where his parents did odd end jobs for several years to make ends meet. Growing up, they instilled in him strong family values, a thirst for education, and a desire to help those less fortunate. In 1992, Vishal received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Stony Brook University in New York. He was accepted to New York Medical College where he received his Medical Degree in 1996, followed by a general surgery residency at New York Methodist hospital. Often working upto 110 hours a week for 5 years, Vishal gained vast exposure to general surgery, trauma, vascular, thoracic, and plastic surgery. Infact, Vishal was geared on becoming a plastic surgeon until he was exposed to Bariatric Surgery as a senior resident. He assisted in gastric bypasses and gastroplasties, and witnessed first hand how drastically the patients’ lives improved. No other field offered this level of gratification. He stopped pursuing plastic surgery and decided to pursue a career as a bariatric surgeon. After finishing his general surgery residency, Dr. Mehta completed a bariatric surgery fellowship and became amongst the first fellowship trained bariatric surgeons in the United States. He subsequently formed the Mehta Bariatric Center, dedicating his time and focus on the treatment of obesity.
Vishal’s technical skills and dedication as a laparoscopic bariatric surgeon has gained him a reputation amongst his peers, however, his focus has always been about more than surgery. His greatest satisfaction comes from watching his patients' lives transform as they start discovering a whole new world and the possibilities life offers. He makes sure his patients are staying motivated, eating healthy, changing undesired patterns, exercising, and more than anything… enjoying life. He not only pushes others to reach for higher goals, he continues to expand his diverse credentials and experience.
